What Is A Kitchen Soffit and Can We Remove The Soffit in The Kitchen?

In California I find that a lot of homes have soffits in their kitchen.

First what is a soffit? Its a boxy structure built to lower the ceiling in the kitchen and other rooms. Soffits are not always a simple item to have removed. They can tricky to deal with because you don’t know what the previous builder buried in the soffit. built to hide wiring, pipes, or other mechanicals, or to fill the space between the top of your cabinets and the ceiling. Depending on the age of your home they may be very large and perhaps even extend out past the cabinets.

When removing the soffits in your kitchen is not an option disguising them could be another option. This kitchen has a soffit that has been covered with moulding

Removing the Soffits

Removing soffits can be a messy process. Be prepared to remove a ton of drywall. Take caution to avoid those spaces you marked as untouchable and be cautious as your remove the soffit.

Most of the drywall will reveal empty space underneath it, though. You may need to apply some elbow grease to the parts of the soffit that are attached to the walls. It may not always be a cinch to remove the entire thing, but with the proper amount of tools and time, it can be done. Most of the time you will find that you will need to reroute some electrical and plumbing. The biggest concern maybe a toilet clean out, that is much harder to relocate.

We are currently finishing up construction on this kitchen remodel in Carlsbad. The kitchen you can see only had a soffit over the range wall. So it was clear to us that there was ducting in this soffit and we decided that we would keep it and modify all the cabinetry and hood to work with the depth of the soffit.
